Key features of a great logo
What makes a great logo? Since the logo is a creative element, there can be
different opinions by everyone. However, here are some universal points on which
a logo can be judged. If a logo satisfies most of the points below, then it can
be considered to be a great logo!
Readability: fonts can be tricky sometimes and an i might look like a t, or a
k might look like a p. a good logo is the one which manages to avoid this
problem and ensures that it is highly readable. The fonts used in the logo
should be of a good size and proportionate to the place where it is being used.
A very small logo is likely to loose at least 50% of its readability whereas a
very large one is likely to look very odd. The fonts must be clear and easy to
read and the company name should be easy to figure out.
Adaptability: A great logo is one which manages to look good irrespective of
where it is placed (pretty much like a good looking model who dresses to have a
shower!). The logo should have the versatility to look good on paper, when used
in various mediums of advertising and even outdoors. It comes as no surprise
that some of the simplest logos are the ones which satisfy this criterion to the
highest level.
Colors: the color of the logo is probably more critical than the font style
used. As mentioned earlier in one of our articles, the importance of color is
very high and a great logo is one which manages to capture the right color
choice which matches the product range, the company profile, the usage pattern
and even the weather! Think this is a difficult nut to crack? You bet it is.
Range: logos go through a number of modifications and a logo which can offer a
wide range of options even in the future can be considered a great logo.
Sometimes a company might decide to use a color variation of the original logo
to demonstrate a new division or activity. It is this range of the logo which
allows designers in the company creative freedom without losing out on the
original aspect of the logo.
Intrigue: Last but not the least; a logo should have an element of intrigue
to it. This indescribable factor of the logo can make the logo look very
interesting and lend a sense of mystery to it. It is not easy to build in this
intrigue factor in the logo but if the designer can create a logo which has some
interesting elements and explain what influenced his designing decisions, it can
create an intriguing logo.
Designing logos is part of the graphic designer’s work. However, designing
great logos does require the extra bit of creativity which is well worth the
effort in the long run.
